The Salon Mcrlife Journey So Far

So how did I end up here?

When I decided to relocate to Manchester, I put a deposit down on a flat in Ancoats and had no idea what was ahead for me. The Salon Mcrlife hadn’t even crossed my mind! Originally born in South Africa, I came to England when I was 7 years old, so I have always been used to uprooting from a young age. I lived down South for many years before starting a new career onboard luxury cruise liners.

I spent 6 years travelling around the world, working incredibly hard and visiting some of the most beautiful countries. In 2015, shortly after completing a gruelling 8-month contract, I discovered I had a borderline ovarian cyst on my right ovary. The cyst measured 15cm in length, and I was rushed to hospital. I, fortunately, had it operated on and after removing my right ovary, non of the borderline disease spread. This, as you can imagine, was an incredible shock. I had no idea I was so ill. This made me evaluate a lot. Suddenly, it was clear bouncing around from contract to contract and never really switching off was a toxic lifestyle. I made some big and bold changes and decided to move my life to Manchester in 2017.

I placed a deposit on a flat in an area I had no idea about called Ancoats. I figured it’s near Piccadilly and near a canal – must be good. I came to Manchester not knowing a soul, but I was determined to make this work.

After The Move

I have always wanted to build a community from the day I came here. I noticed so many people like me who had moved to a city not knowing many people and trying to make a life for themselves in a city. I got to work and wrote to everyone in my building to see if we could create a community. I wanted everyone to feel like they had someone to turn to if they ever needed help. If friendships came out of it, then that would be a bonus!

Having stepped back from hairdressing when I finished with the cruise ships, It was important to me to start looking after myself mentally and physically. I embarked on a fitness journey and got myself a job in hospitality to figure out what my next step was. I noticed that there were a lot of people in my area that struggled to find a decent, affordable hairdresser. I started The Salon from my own home to supplement my income, working alongside Mcrlife (who own various properties in Ancoats). This enabled me to create the community I loved being a part of and solving a problem!

Fast forward to 2019, I was running The Salon at home, working at Federal Cafe, and I was approached to go and work for Lululemon. This opportunity not only helped me grow as a person, but it really defined my values and how I wanted to show up in the world. Lululemon was everything I needed and wanted in a workplace and how I saw myself running my business. People are the heart and soul of everything I do, from connecting people, to helping others grow, to being your number one supporter. This is what is so important to me.
